CD Review--"Tain"

Hi All
Thought it might be time for my first "thread." To enter this forum, I'd like to focus on Jeff "Tain" Watts. In my first post, I mentioned how much I really enjoyed his playing. He seems to fuse enough of my jazz heroes from the past (I'm over 50) into his own voice today. I just really love his CD, Bar Talk.

I wondered if anyone has heard this and would like to comment. I am new to drumming and do not have the vocabulary most here have nor the scope of musical experience. This is why I am rather interested in your opinion.

I continue to enjoy reading from this forum, even though I don't always get a lot of the "inside" stuff. I do enjoy hearing about new drummers mentioned, and then researching. I love the Internet for precisely this! I found it a thrill to know Mr. Erskine has stopped by several times. I believe my interest in drumming may have started after listening to Weather Report's 8:30. WOW! Birdland became my favorite song for years after that album! What a thrill to me knowing Peter has been here. He is a great, and IMO, a living musical legend. This is fun.

ello I.P! I haven't heard Bar Talk, but I do have Jeff's first solo venture and countless other CD's with him on, Standard Time by Wynton being my favourite!
Jeff is without doubt one of the modern day jazz drumming heros. He's taken his influences from Elvin, Tony, Jack and others and created the most hard swinging, melodic, dramatic drumming approach. If you can't nod your head or tap your foot when he plays, you must be clinically brain dead!!
I always love hearing and watching him play and will always remember seeing him two nights in a row at The Jazz Cafe in London with Kenny Garett and the late Kenny Kirkland. I don't think I've ever seen and enjoyed a more harder swinging gig!

Tain is sick, and Bar Talk is a great disk. The first track is killer, I dig that little funky interlude. Tain's also got some serious polyrhythm stuff down, and I remember one of the tunes on that disk seems to slow down and speed up in different sections (based on different subdivisions I think). Anyways, you should check out "The Dark Keys" by Brandfor Marsalis for some really open trio stuff with Tain.

I was with "Tain" 2 weeks ago in Belgium, he was playing with Branford who is also one of my hero.

Well, "Tain"'s drumming, you have to listen Wynton Marsalis ("Black codes", "Standard" Time Vol I" and "Live at The Blues Alley"), Branford Marsalis ("Crazy People Music", "Contempory Jazz"), Kenny Kirkland, Kenny Garret ("Song Book"), his own albums and everywhere where is playing !!!!

I name him and Vinnie the Pittsburg Brothers !!!
